Yarns

  -  Yarns

Ärni Blum's world of yarn is vibrant and diverse! Instead of resting on laurels and using the same yarns over and over again, we continuously seek the most perfect yarn for each new item. Often, we combine different yarns, creating intriguing material compositions in our products. The all-time favourite is 100% extra-fine merino wool combined with silk mohair, which has been used in the LU cardigan and Jasmin sweater. Every yarn is carefully chosen, with lots of love and attention going into the selection process; and are mainly sourced from Italy and Japan.

MERINO WOOL

100% extrafine merino wool
Origin: Italy

The fine and soft merino wool is obtained from the undercoat of Merino sheep. It regulates body temperature, meaning that it keeps you warm in cold weather, while allowing your skin to breath in hot weather. Merino wool feels gentle on the skin, doesn't itch and wicks moisture away from the skin so you won't feel cold when sweating. Products made of merino wool remain odor-free even after multiple days of wear. Merino knits are elastic and resistant to wrinkling. Taking care of merino wool items is easy as they can withstand machine washing on the wool cycle.

CASHMERE

70% superfine merino, 30% ultrafine cashmere
Origin: Italy

Cashmere wool is obtained from cashmere goats that originate from the slopes of the Himalayas in Tibet. Did you know that one shearing from a goat can yield up to 6 kg of wool, whereas cashmere goats ‘produce’ only 300-500 g of fiber per year? Due to a very high price tag, cashmere fibers are often blended with other fibers. The cashmere yarn used in Ärni Blum is blended with "extra-fine" merino wool, making it super versatile. Cashmere wool is renowned for its exceptional softness and warmth, making it one of the most luxurious and expensive natural textiles. At the same time, merino wool regulates body temperature and is easy to care for. Therefore, products knitted from such an excellent combination of yarn are perfect for year-round use.

ALPACA WOOL

100% alpaca wool
Origin: Italy

Certifications: FSC certification, chemical management 4sustainability, RCS certification

Alpaca wool comes from alpacas, a camelid species native to South America. It is a soft, warm and valuable fiber. The wool is exceptionally strong and durable, resistant to wrinkling and pilling. Alpaca yarn is breathable, lightweight, and exhibits a beautiful natural shimmer. While alpaca wool may not be not as sturdy as sheep's wool, it is seven times more thermally efficient. Items made of alpaca wool are often recommended for people with sensitive skin due to its softness and non-prickly nature. Alpaca wool also has water and dirt-repellent properties, making it easy to care for.

KID SILK MOHAIR

Mohair 60%, silk 40%
Origin: Japan

Mohair – Mohair is obtained from Angora goats, that originate from the slopes of the Himalayas in Tibet. Mohair fibers are warm, lightweight and durable, with excellent resistance to aging. Mohair has a unique sheen and actually reflects light. Mohair products are suitable for people with sensitive skin as they are softer than wool. Mohair adds exceptional fluffiness and airiness to knitted items. Mohair is considered a luxurious fiber, known for its rarity and higher price tag, which often leads to blending it with other fibers. For our products we use mohair that is combined with silk.

Silk – Silk fiber is obtained from the cocoons of silkworms, and its production began in China around 4500 years ago. Silk is lightweight, smooth and has a gentle sheen. It allows the body to breathe, absorbs moisture and provides good insulation. Silk is quite elastic and resistant to wrinkling. However, it requires to be washed delicately with lukewarm water and should not be exposed to high ironing temperatures.

COTTON

100% cotton
Origin: Italy
Certifications: oeko-tex certification, GOTs certification, fsc certification, chemical management 4sustainability, RCS certification.

Cotton is obtained from the cotton plant, with a history dating back 7000 years to India and Mexico. Cotton is strong and withstands friction well, so it doesn't pill or generate static. It allows air to pass through, making it ideal for summer wear. Cotton absorbs moisture well but takes longer to dry. Cotton knits are easy to care for and can be washed easily.

COTTON AND POLYAMIDE BLEND YARN

75% Alpaca wool and 25% polyamide
Origin: Italy
Certifications: GOTS certified

Polyamide is a synthetic fiber. The addition of polyamide in wool makes the knitted items more durable and helps them to maintain their shape. Polyamide should not be exposed to high temperatures during washing.

A yarn combining both cotton and polyamide is ideal for summer wear. The addition of polyamide provides better shape retention, preventing the cotton from stretching easily, and ensuring the knitted items maintain their form.

WOOL

100% wool
Origin: Italy

Wool is the term used for the mass of fibers obtained from animals through shearing or combing. The most common type of wool fiber is sheep's wool. Wool fiber has a long history and is the oldest known animal-based textile fiber. Woolen knits are warm, breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and absorb moisture fairly slow. However, woolen knits are prone to pilling and may feel more coarse compared to the other yarns we use.

The already perfect alpaca wool can be improved when combined with polyamide, making items more durable and helps them to maintain their shape. Polyamide should not be exposed to high temperatures during washing.
